Names
My name is Arturo Fonseca, as you can tell its definitely a Spanish name. I think my name is a little tricky to say if you don’t speak Spanish, I have had to say more than twice so someone could remember it. Same goes for my last name, people always think Fonseca starts with a P. Sometimes I even give fake names at McDonald's just because I don’t want to repeat myself and explain to them how to spell it. I’ll give some real simple name like Joe or Mike, although they seem to know how to read minds because I always get a wired look.
I have made some research on my name and found out that it means noble strength, and noble means that that a person is of a high rank or something. I’d like to think of myself like that but in reality I’m not. It also has an Italian meaning which is: bear, and trust me I don’t attack anyone or anything. My last name is totally different it means a dry well. I always thought my last name had more character than that.
At home I don’t hear my real name too much, my parents have a bunch of nicknames for me. I’ll start with Chapo, in Spanish it is a shorter name for the word chaparro, which means short. I don’t know why they call me that because I’m the tallest in my family. Next one would be Turo, little kids call me that maybe because they cant say it right. Another one is Chico, I don’t know where that one came from. Hijo is another, it means son in Spanish. So I rarely hear my real name in the house.
Even though I have problems with my name I like it, for sure its a bother at times but not a lot of people have it. All throughout high school I only encountered one other Arturo same goes for my last name. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of airplanes. I think its because of that A in front, it has that shape with the wings and stuff. Plus I saw this TV show that showed studies made on people’s names with the letter A in front and noticed that they live longer that other people so that’s an extra.
If I ever have a kid I’ll make it simple but exotic, yeah exotic. If its a boy I would like the name Enzo. Enzo is an Italian name and it is also the name of the person that created the famous brand known as Ferrari. I think that would be an awesome name because it’s simple but its different, I know a bunch of Gilberts, Juans, and Jerrys but never encountered a Enzo. But if it turns out to be a girl I’ve got some researching to do in the future.
You mention how your first name reminds you of an airplane because of the "A" at the start of it, and to be honest, your last name reminds me of a Mexican cheese, for some odd reason! However, besides that, I find that name study interesting. I guess we're going to live to be 130-years old or somewhere in that range!
ReplyDeleteI had the same issue with my last name. Not one of my instructors could get it right. Although, in most recent years my last name is becoming more commonly known. Keep fighting the good fight. One day, your last name will be more recognizable.

ReplyDeleteSo your family calls your short in Spanish even though you're tall? It's funny because my family calls my brother fat even though he's the skinniest person we've ever known.
ReplyDeleteMy parents often use a variety of nicknames for me at home too. I like the name you have for your kid. Its unique and not really heard around here.
